Gymnastics
and the people who practiced it with the Long Island Turners are a
valuable part of our society's history. Since the sale of our
own Gymnasium in Long Island City, our society has relegated itself
to simply promoting gymnastics for children. We rented
gymnastic facilities and several of our members volunteered as
instructors. That program was open to all and it was fairly
successful. In the fall of 2002, the high school where we were
renting the gym and some gymnastic equipment, decided that
Gymnastics would no longer be offered to their students. They
sold off all their gym equipment making it impossible for us to
continue our children's program. Our members regarded this as
a major setback, but still resolved that Gymnastics would once again
be offered by the LIT. In that spirit, we decided to assemble
a special newsletter to show what was once done and might yet be
accomplished again. With the contributions of many of our
Turners, we assembled a collection of photos and articles and posted
them on the web site in preparation for a newsletter. The
newsletter was assembled, but early attempts at the printing process
were disappointing. Later efforts were more successful and we
were able to publish that newsletter in time for distribution at our
130th Anniversary.
We proudly present the
material that was contributed and ask that anyone with additional
items, please send them to us for posting. As always, comments
and corrections are welcome.
