Greeting Turners!

A
t this time I would like to congratulate our new slate of the Board of Officers conducted at last night's meeting.

The Board is as follows:

President - Maureen Boylan
Vice President - Marion Oppelt
Financial Treasurer/Secretary - Kathy Carroll
Recording Secretary - Theresa Buehler
Corresponding Secretary - Renate Hartel
Physical Education/Turnfest - MaryJo Bursig
Turnwart - Jim Goetz
Cultural Committee - Matthew Bursig
House Committee - Rich Voss
Internet Committee - George Zink
Trustee - Armand Santillo
Trustee - Inge Trampler

Congratulations to all, the Board will work very hard at implementing new ideas, suggestions, amendments to make the Board run more smoothly and efficiently. I thank you for the overwhelming support I have received. We are going to be implementing news policies regarding the ballots, emails, and new amendments that were signed and voted on this year, and we are currently working on a revised copy of our Constitution. We are here for you, this is your society.

On a personal note, there were some egregious remarks made towards me last night that were not only incorrect, but down right distasteful that I feel should be clarified. I have worked very hard the past two years as President in making the society membership more accessible and involved by creating an email database of keeping everyone informed as much as possible of meeting notices, events, elections and so on and was created by me and wasn't ever done so in the recent past. I have also attended for the past 4-5 years almost all the district meetings scheduled as both non president alternate delegate as well and president, check the attendance records, and have done so in a capacity as an alternate, and when was called upon to vote, I voted. As an alternate you are not required to be at all the meetings, but I chose to attend and did so because of my personal interest and was the best thing for me as a Turner.
I have also held at least 3-4 membership meetings the past two years which was not done previously either. When I asked to be President, no one else wanted the position. I was asked at a District Meeting in October 2009 to be president, I said yes, and was voted on the next annual meeting of elections. I never met a nominating committee nor was there one for the past few years because the process was very lax. If we're going to scream and yell at how we need a 3 person nominating committee, then the rules of our constitution should have been followed prior my presidency 2 years ago and the standard should have been maintained.
In regards to the voting ballots, they were created by me as a way of keeping the long distance membership involved so they can have a voice and still have a feeling of being involved with the membership. There was nothing done underhanded or a secret ballot issue created by any means at all, let's not forget the intent that the ballots were created for and voted on.

In going forward, we will make the society better and more efficient in adhering to our by-laws.

Inge's Art Classes have returned!

Art Classes at the Turners

Inge is an accomplished artist who works in various mediums. The Turners are fortunate that she has been sharing her skills with young and old. She has been instructing various art classes at the ATNY facility for several years. She works with beginners and advanced students.

This cultural aspect is part our effort to keep a Sound Mind in a Sound Body. The program is supported by the American Turner Jahn Education Fund and therefore she can keep fees affordable for participating students. Non-Members are welcome and pay slightly higher fees.

Upcoming sessions are as follows: Painting with Acrylics
All materials will be provided at the beginning of the first class.

Children from age 8 through 14,
Wednesdays, Session #45
October 19, 26 and November 2 and 9 from 4:00 pm until 5:30 pm

Adults, any age
Tuesdays, Session #46
November 15, 29 and December 6 and 13 from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm

Inge makes sure that you will enjoy the classes. She will help you in developing your or your child’s artistic talent. You can sign up by completing the Sign-Up Sheet in the lobby in front of the security desk.

** Also I know it's early but I would like to get the memberships thoughts as to what to for a Christmas party this year? Would we like to do a dinner at Zum Stammtisch or a dinner at the Elks Club in Valley Stream, (Al's Elks Club) etc. Have dinner with the ATNY folks? Just throwing out ideas here, let me know and see you on Nov. 7th.

Greetings Turners!
October 3, 20011

I hope everyone is slipping into the Fall season nicely, but I'm sure we are not ready for winter any time soon. I hope to see you at some upcoming events.
Here are some reminders and notes going on with Long Island.

Over this past weekend, I finally have received a hard copy of the final results of the Turnfest. Overall our society placed 5th place of eight societies with 382 points and we placed in fourth place in the cultural with 167 points. I will bring the hard copy with me to volleyball tomorrow night so you can see your individual standings. Congratulations to all who went, competed and represented the Long Island Turners. We had a good time, we had a small amount of Turners that went but we still did well and had fun.

Sept. 17th, we marched in the Steuben Day Parade and I'm sorry to say we had a very small turnout. I know many of the members are out of towners or have marched for years previously but we really do need so see the members that are local and give some time to representing the society by marching. Please consider marching next year and let's have a stronger showing.

Membership dues are due and you should have received your statement in the mail. If not please let me know right away and we'll correct that. If you can find a way to make a donation from the honorary members that would be most welcome.

This Sat. October 9th is ATNY's annual Octoberfest which Irme is running. The gathering is from 2-6 pm. at ATNY. If you plan on attending please call the club 718-829-4200 directly or you can email Irme directly jamirm1590@aol.com and let her know if you plan on going. Irme is looking for any items do donate for the raffle prizes.

Save the Date: October 30th - 25/40/50 luncheon will be held, I'm waiting on details from Irme on this.

As I've mentioned in past emails, I am currently looking for a new home for our membership meetings as there were a few problems in the past with our old meeting place. Al Medina has graciously stepped up and has offered to help with finding a new place for us. Last weekend I went to The Elks Club which Al is a member of in Lynbrook NY. It was a very nice facility but unfortunately they are requesting too much money to use a side room for a meeting, they are requesting 60.00 per hour which I feel financially is not in our budget. There are a few other places that Al will be looking into but he has just gone on vacation so I have to await his return. In the meantime I will look for another location that will accommodate us. If anyone knows of any facility they would like me to look into please feel free to pass it on to me.

That's all for now, please view our website as their are new pictures up of the Turnfest which George Zink has updated, thank you George for doing this...

If anyone has any questions, ideas or suggestions they would like to share please contact me, I would be happy to accommodate.
I will keep everyone posted shortly as elections are coming up.

Greetings Turners!

 June 28, 2011

I hope everyone is enjoying the summer so far and yet staying dry between the rain drops.  Regarding Turner information, not too much has been going on the past two months.  The Turners attended the national bowling event which our bowlers did well but did not medal.

The National Turnfest is coming up and we have several Turners attending and competing, myself, Barbara LeCornec, Chris and Al Medina, Kathy Carroll, Leo Ionna, Marion Oppelt,  Theresa Buehler, George Zink, Jim and Gail Goetz in various sporting activities.  The Turnfest will be July 6-10th.

July 4th Festivities – ATNY is having their annual celebration.  Sunday July 3rd $25.00 adult member’s $35.00 adult guests.  Price Includes:  Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Sausage & Peppers, Chicken, Steak, Salad and more.  Cash bar – DJ at 6pm.  Tickets are available at the security desk, no tickets will be sold day of the event.

Volleyball nets – we have the equipment listed up on eBay for $625.00 dollars for the nets, antennas, cushions so hopefully soon we will have a buyer.

A note from Marion Oppelt  - A warm thank you to all our friends who came by, sent cards and showed how much they cared at the passing of Karl (Booby) Oppelt.  Your kind words and shares memories are cherished.  Marion

There will be no meetings over the summer, we will resume in September.  Everyone please have a safe and enjoyable summer!

Regards,

Maureen Boylan

Dates to Remember:

The 53rd National Turnfest, Aurora IL. - July 6-11th, 2011

53rd National Festival

The 53rd National Festival will be held in Aurora, IL beginning July 6th through the 11th in 2011. So make your plans now to attend the festival. The Festival will also have the National Golf and Softball tournaments for the first time. The Softball tournament will take place before the Turnfest and you must have a team to enter. (July 2 and 3rd) The Golf tournament will take place during the Turnfest, (July 6, 7, and 8) but the golf fees are a separate entity and are not included in the Festival fees.

If you are interested in either golf or softball, please contact me for more information. The activities for the Turnfest are the same as the previous festivals: track and field, volleyball, gymnastics, swimming and special games. As well as the social events held each evening with a banquet on Saturday night. We will be able to make up district volleyball teams or conglomerate teams if Long Island does not have enough players to make up its own team.
If you have been receiving your Turner Topics, you have seen Festival information included in the Topics. Remember, if you have any questions about the events etc, please contact me. I have been regularly attending the National Physical Education Meetings and the committee has been constantly revising the rule book. But remember you must be a regular member of our society for at least three months (90days) previous to the Festival. So if you have not paid your dues, please send then in ASAP.

The applications will be available in January, and as Turnfest coordinator, I will send all the applications in at the same time with the fees. We will also coordinate the hotel so everyone will be staying at the same place. Maureen will be working on both group airfare rates as well as the hotel rates with details forthcoming.
If you are planning on attending the Festival, please contact me at: mjsbursig@aol.com and put in the subject-national festival. (That is in case I do not know your email and delete it.) Or you may call me at work: 718-728-2030.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Now is the time to get in shape for the festival so make it your new year's resolution.

Mary Jo Bursig
National Festival Coordinator

Cultural:

Attention all our talented cultural members! We have two events to look forward to in 2011. The Hallenfest is being held at ATNY on March 6th, 2011 as well as the National Festival. You do not need to be present to submit your cultural entries. But you do need to contact me, so we can make all the arrangements to submit your entries.

I do need to send your application and cultural form with the entries in the beginning of May for the National Festival and we then can coordinate delivering your items to Aurora. Remember you may enter any items you have made during the past four years-as long as you did not enter the item at the Springfield National Festival. (But each member is limited to 10 entries.) If you have any questions, please contact me at mjsbursig@aol.com. Long Island has always done very well at the Festival Cultural competition, so let us keep the tradition going. The more members that contribute, the more points we can earn.

Thank You,
Matthew Bursig
Cultural Chairperson
